Mindful Leadership in the Age of Burnout
Traditional leadership optimized for output. Modern leadership optimizes for wholeness — of the leader and the team. Executive presence has become the ultimate leadership skill: the ability to remain grounded, clear and compassionate under pressure. There is an old distinction worth revisiting — Servant Leadership versus Savant Leadership. The savant leads by knowing more; the servant leads by caring more. As Robert K. Greenleaf, who coined the modern idea of servant leadership, wrote: "The servant-leader is servant first. It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead." In an age of burnout, the leaders that endure are those who serve their people's wholeness before they serve the quarter's output. Presence, not performance, is the new performance.
